Manson Construction recently won a $11.5 million contract for the Navarre Beach Restoration Project.
For the project the contractor is planning to use trailing suction hopper dredge “Glenn Edwards”. Over 500,000 cy of sand will be dredged and placed on to the beach to replace sand lost due to Hurricane Sally.
The Glenn Edwards is tentatively scheduled to be off Navarre Beach on December 15, 2024. However, preparation work (mobilization) of shore and Gulf dredging pipelines will, tentatively, begin on November 27, 2024.
The project will begin approximately 900 feet east of the Fishing pier and continue west to the Gulf Islands Park property. The deadline to complete the work is February 28, 2025.
Navarre Beach Restoration
The initial Navarre Beach nourishment project took place in 2006. The first major re-nourishment project occurred from April to June 2016 and included placing 1.31 million cubic yards of sand.
On September 16, 2020, Hurricane Sally made landfall about fifty miles west of Navarre Beach. The post-storm survey indicated the project lost 254,222 cubic yards of sand due to Hurricane Sally.
In April 2023, the County’s Coastal Engineer, Mr. Tem Fountaine, presented the Board two options: 1) to pursue a project that only replaces sand removed by Sally, or 2) a full renourishment of the Navarre Beach estimated to be 580,000 cy. After the presentation, the Board chose option two, a full beach restoration.
