Brig. Gen. Daniel Hibner, Commander of the South Atlantic Division of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), was briefed on and visited the San Juan Harbor Dredging and Deepening Project yesterday.
“ On board the DV Avalon, he witnessed the operations of this state-of-the-art vessel, the largest and one of the most efficient clamshell dredges in North America ,” said USACE.
The project aims to widen and deepen the inner harbor channels, benefiting both cruise ships and petroleum terminal operators.
According to USACE, these upgrades will boost economic efficiency at the island’s main seaport, enhancing commercial navigation.
San Juan Harbor is located on the northern coast of Puerto Rico and is the island’s principal port.
The majority of the Commonwealth’s waterborne cargo and cruise ships pass through the harbor, handling more than 75 percent of the non-petroleum waterborne commerce.
