For centuries, the low-lying Netherlands is protecting itself against the water. With rising sea levels and more extreme weather conditions, coastal defense is needed more than ever, Boskalis said.
With autumn just around the corner – and thus the wind and waves advancing towards the beach – replenishing the coastline is critical.
“ Our four sister vessels Causeway, Freeway, Shoalway and Strandway have therefore been working on beach replenishment projects along the Dutch coast for many years ,” said Boskalis .
The four trailing suction hopper dredgers (TSHDs) are currently working for Rijkswaterstaat to reinforce the coastline of the Netherlands’ southernmost coastal province Zeeland , replenishing the beaches at Renesse and on the western tip of Schouwen-Duiveland .
Early 2025, another campaign is planned to strengthen the coast of Domburg .
In total, the Zeeland coast will then have been reinforced with more than 1.8 million cubic meters of sand.
