The City of Niterói continues to make great progress with the dredging work in the São Lourenço Canal.
The project, considered the largest of its kind in Brazil, is expected to be completed in 15 months. In total, 1,600,000m³ of sediment from Guanabara Bay is expected to be dredged, out of which more than 183,808.40m3 has already been dredged.
The city is investing approx. $23 million in the work, with the aim of revitalizing the naval park, access to the Port and the fishing industry. The goal is to boost the economy of these sectors and generate around 20,000 jobs.
In this phase, three pieces of equipment are dredging material in the area close to the islands of Santa Cruz, Conceição and Mocanguê – the hopper dredger Kenford and two clamshell dredgers.
All material collected by the Kenford and clamshell dredgers is transported by sea to an area determined by INEA (ocean dump), where it is dumped.
Once completed in late 2025, the depth (draft) of the Canal will increase from 7 to 11 meters, which will boost the naval, offshore and fishing industries, generating jobs and income for Niterói and boosting the economy in all these sectors.
