The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District is preparing to continue beach renourishment of the Mid-Reach segment of the Brevard County, Florida Shore Protection Project from December 2024 to April 2025.

Due to recent issues with the contractor’s dredge, sand will instead be obtained from a permitted upland sand mine near Ft. Pierce, Florida and loaded onto dump trucks for delivery to the Mid-Reach segment.

The plan is to offload sand at key beach access points starting at the southern end of the project in early December and continue working generally northward towards the southern border of Patrick Space Force Base.

Areas along the northern Mid-Reach that were partially filled during Season 1 (January-April 2024) will be completed during Season 2 (December 2024 – April 2025) in addition to the areas along the southern Mid-Reach that were not renourished during Season 1.

The beach renourishment of the Mid-Reach is expected to be completed by April 30, 2025 prior to the next sea turtle nesting season and the start of the 2025 hurricane season to provide increased protection against storm surge and wave-generated erosion.

Construction of the project, contracted through The Duta Group, began in March 2024 but had to pause at the end of April due to the start of the 2024 sea turtle nesting season in Brevard County.

During this time, roughly 102,000 cubic yards of sand obtain from an offshore borrow area was placed along the Mid-Reach between the southern border of Patrick Space Force Base and just south of Palm Springs Blvd in Indian Harbour Beach, Florida.
