As a low lying country, the Netherlands needs strong dikes to protect itself from the ever-rising water.
Boskalis has therefore been working since 2015 – the physical work started in 2019 – together with its partners in a public-private alliance to strengthen the Markermeerdijken in North Holland.
This is a 33 kilometer long dike along the Markermeer between Hoorn and Durgerdam, near Amsterdam. Boskalis’ colleagues who have been working there for years recently reached a special milestone: the last load of sand for strengthening the dock was delivered.
The supplied sand will be spread further over the work site in the near future. This will happen both internally and externally as several segments of the dock have been finished in recent months.
The thing special about this typical Dutch infrastructure project is that it is not only very functional, but also offers great added value for recreation in the area.
In Hoorn, for example, a city beach has been built which has already been used by thousands of people last summer and a few kilometers from this beach, we are creating an embankment, where bicycle and walking paths and (swimming) piers will be built.
