The City of Long Beach (CA) has submitted permit application for maintenance dredging of the Alamitos Bay Entrance Channel.
According to the Corps, the City is planning to conduct one-time maintenance dredging of the Alamitos Bay Entrance Channel for navigational purposes. Dredging is needed to maintain adequate navigational depths for boater recreation and access.
The proposed project includes maintenance dredging of the entrance channel to a design depth of -20 feet mean lower low water (MLLW), plus 2 feet of overdredge allowance.
The total volume of material proposed for dredging is estimated to be approximately 415,000 cubic yards, consisting of approximately 300,000 cy above design depth and 115,000 cy of allowable overdredge volume.
The dredged materials were determined suitable for beach nourishment by the Dredged Material Management Team (DMMT) earlier this year, and will be used for beach nourishment at Peninsula Beach.
Dredging is to be performed using hydraulic cutter-suction dredge equipment, with the sandy sediment being pumped directly to the adjacent Peninsula Beach on the west side of the Entrance Channel’s jetty.
The deadline for sending comments on the proposed Alamitos Bay Entrance Channel Maintenance Dredging project is January 10, 2025.
