Following the completion of the Port of Townsville channel upgrade project, the largest cruise ship to ever sail into Townsville has now docked.
The arrival of the 294-metre luxury Queen Elizabeth is the culmination of a $251 million project to widen the channel at the Port of Townsville.
“ As an Australian contractor, we’re proud to have overcome stiff competition from European-based multinational dredging companies to deliver the upgrade in our home state, creating approximately 140 local jobs and boosting the Queensland economy ,” said Hall Contracting . “Our team widened the Platypus Channel and the adjoining Sea Channel, enabling Townsville to welcome cargo, defense and cruise ships of up to 300 meters in length.”
As part of the channel upgrade project, Port of Townsville Limited engaged Hall to undertake the civil works including the construction of a 2.2.km rock wall and revetments, creating a 60-hectare reclamation area for material dredged from the channel.
The scope of works included hauling and placing 266,465m³ of core rock, 39,839m³ of secondary armor stone and 143,682m³ of primary armor stone, and geotextile lining the internal surface of the rock wall.
