Boskalis completed the Port of Chiapas dredging program recently.
“ Every dredging project, of course, serves its own purpose. In the case of our dredging project in the Port of Chiapas, located on the Pacific side of Mexico, the goal was clear: to remove a large amount of accumulated sand and excess sediment to create sufficient depth for ships calling at the port, including cruise ships ,” Boskalis said. “And that is exactly what our trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) Crestway recently did, both in the access channel to Puerto Chiapas and in the port basin where ships can maneuver.”
Now that the Crestway has left the Mexican key port on the Pacific, it is time for the (cruise) ships to arrive and use the port for what it was built for. In addition to being an important port for cruise and container vessels, the port of Chiapas is also an important hub for agricultural exports in the region. The TSHD, meanwhile, has set course for another project in Mexico.
It is performing maintenance dredging in the port of Tampico, on the Atlantic side of the country. To get there, the vessel recently sailed once again through the Panama Canal, Boskalis said.
