To mitigate coastal risks—particularly flooding—and enhance the resilience of Togolese and Beninese shorelines against climate change, mechanical dredging of the Gbaga channel and the restoration of its surrounding ecosystem are currently underway.
Since the project’s launch, biweekly site meetings have been held to evaluate progress and coordinate necessary actions.
The 12th such meeting took place on Thursday, February 6, 2025, at the site office of TC MARINES ZILLA GROUP, the company overseeing the dredging operations, in the village of Agokpamé, approximately 50 km southeast of Lomé in Togo’s Maritime region.
The primary objective of the meeting was to finalize the contractors’ action plan for completing the work by June 30, 2025, and to validate the associated financial implications. A comprehensive progress report was presented, along with corrective measures to address any delays.
Previous meetings had already resulted in key decisions, including expanding and improving access roads, increasing the number of storage sites, and reinforcing dredging equipment to enhance operational efficiency.
Unlike the transboundary coastal protection efforts, the dredging of the Gbaga channel is led exclusively by Togo, with completion expected by the end of June 2025.
