The Maldives’ President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said that work to reclaim an additional two hectares of land in Alifu Alifu Ukulhas and protect the island’s shoreline will begin this month.

During the People’s National Congress (PNC) in Ukulhas last night, President Muizzu said that he had met and deliberated with Ukulhas Council yesterday about various development projects necessary for the island, including housing concerns.

“I spoke in detail about things needed for the development of this island. Housing concerns. There are things that still need to be done in the reclaimed area, like leveling and such. And there is also a need for some more land, so I said I will add on about two more hectares of land ,” Muizzu said.

A total of 13 hectares of land was reclaimed in Ukulhas in 2023. The original land area of Ukulhas is 21 hectares, while the island has a population of more than 1,200.

Ukulhas has exhausted its available land and faces significant demand for housing. No residential plots have been allocated on the island for more than 25 years, and several families continue to require plots of their own.
